Travel with die-fussballreise.de to the games of the „Schwiizer Nati“, the popular football national team of Switzerland. Book football trips, tickets, and hotel for the games of Switzerland, the World Cup and European Championship hosts of 1954 and 2008. Experience rustic Swiss hospitality and football enthusiasm live.
After Great Britain, Switzerland was the first country in Europe where football could establish itself as a sport. In 1879, the oldest club in Switzerland, FC St. Gallen, was founded. In 1904, Switzerland was a founding member of the world football association FIFA.
As early as February 1905, the Swiss national team played its first international match against France in Paris.
The country has a special relationship with its neighbor Germany.
The match on April 5, 1908, against Switzerland in Basel (5:3) was the very first DFB international match.
Also, the first German international match after the end of the war in 1945 – Germany was readmitted to FIFA at the suggestion of Switzerland – in November 1950 and the German „reunification match“ of 1990 (both matches in Stuttgart) were each historic encounters with the SFV national team.
Since 2004, Switzerland has consistently qualified for World and European Championships. The greatest success at a World Cup after the war was reaching the quarterfinals at the home World Cup in 1954.
In 1934 and 1938, the national team of the Swiss also reached the round of the last eight. In 2021, they also reached the quarterfinals at a EURO.
In 1946, Switzerland was the only applicant to host the 1954 World Cup. The country, which remained neutral and was not affected by the war during World War II – like Sweden (World Cup host in 1958) – was finally awarded the tournament in 1948.
It became a mystical World Cup for Switzerland as well as for the other German-speaking countries, Germany (world champions), and Austria (semifinals).
The six match venues Basel, Bern, Geneva, Lausanne, Lugano, and Zurich are still among the selected home stadiums of the Swiss national team. However, European Championship and World Cup qualification matches are preferably played at St. Jakob-Park in Basel, known as the „Joggeli“. Switzerland has played in Basel 59 times.
Sixty international matches have been held in Zurich.
There have been 72 matches at the legendary Wankdorf Stadium in Bern („Six minutes left in the Wankdorf Stadium in Bern, no one wavers“, Herbert Zimmermann), the final arena of 1954.
Since the capacity of the Basel stadium is only 38,512 spectators, tickets for the Swiss national team are hard to come by.
Fans can easily reach the „Joggeli“ with a shuttle from Basel SBB station (Swiss station) or by train to St. Jakob station.
The fans of the „Nati“, with their red jerseys, cowbells, and snuff, are among the most amicable football supporters in Europe.
But the peaceful Swiss can also act differently. On September 6, 1995, the Swiss national players, including the two Bayern professionals Alain Sutter and Ciriaco Sforza, made headlines worldwide when they unfurled a banner reading „Stop it, Chirac“ during the national anthem before the international match against Sweden in Gothenburg. They were protesting against the nuclear tests in the South Pacific ordered by French President Jacques Chirac. There were no sanctions for the Swiss players…
