Italy is the most successful European country at World Cups after Germany. However, the fact that the "Squadra Azzurra" missed the tournaments in 2018 and 2022 in Russia and Qatar allowed the DFB team to overtake in terms of World Cup participations – Germany has played in 20 World Cup finals, Italy "only" 18 times.

Missing the World Cup in Russia was a historic but not a unique slip for Italy. The goal record has been held by Luigi "Gigi" Riva for 50 years. On September 29, 1973, Riva replaced the previous top scorer and two-time world champion Giuseppe Meazza († 1979) with his 35th international goal against Sweden (2-0) in Milan.
